Day 31 – Bye-bye muffin-top!
Out of curiosity, when I got up today I slipped on my jeans. Despite all the exercise, I still have lots of really soft flab around my waistline (>.<) but I’m working it off. The proof? No hint of a muffin-top!
For people who don’t know (mostly guys, because I am pretty sure girls know what I’m talking about), a muffin top is that bulge of fat that puffs up and around the top of your waistband. It usually indicates someone who is squeezing into pants that are too small for them. If I put on a pair of jeans that are a size down, I’d have a muffin-top. But for the ones that fit…well, they FIT!
I think I may have said this before, but my biggest fashion tip I can give people (and this is exactly what I told people when I worked high-end women’s retail) is that no one is going to see the size number on the tag of your clothes. If they do, then you might need help dressing yourself! Women’s sizes are strange: They’re not based on a standardized set of measurements. Instead, each company makes their own size standards and adjusts their sizes from there. This is why one company’s style of jeans may fit better than another company that has a very similar style. And even then, there can be as much as a whole inch of difference between two of the exact same garments. It all depends on where on the stack the fabric was cut and who put the garments together.
Find the clothes that FIT, not the size you THINK you wear. Always try things on. Make sure the lines are clean and the garment hangs on you without wrinkling or stretching.
If you wear clothes that are too big, the clothing becomes slouchy and wrinkled. It looks like you are heavier because the clothes add more bulk to your body. A woman who is a size 8 but is wearing a 10 or 12 has visually added more bulk to her frame.
When you are in the process of losing weight, it’s tempting to not buy ANY clothes when you are not yet at your goal. Psychologically, this is bad because you look in the mirror and although you know you have lost weight, that slouchiness to the clothing makes you unable to see the difference you’ve made. It can be depressing, and make you want to give up. Now, if you are still losing weight, you don’t have to go out and buy a new wardrobe for every size you lose, but it’s recommended to buy at least an outfit. You’ll feel better about yourself and you’ll LOOK better, giving you the drive to keep going.
On the other hand, if you wear clothes that are too small, you get the look like the pig in the picture for this entry. Your clothes stretch and look like they could rip. You have bulges where you shouldn’t. The clean lines of your clothing are broken because you look like someone stuffed you into your clothes. A woman who is a size 8 and is trying to wear a 4 or 6 does NOT get the “corsetting effect” she is hoping for. Instead, she’s more likely to look like she’s about to burst a seam, and people will think she looks like a sausage or overstuffed pillow.
Wearing clothes that are too small is uncomfortable and also not very flattering. If you stood two identical women next to each other, and put one in too-small clothes and the other in clothes that fit, the one with the clothes that fit will actually look smaller.
So please…eat the healthy muffin tops from your whole-grain oat-bran muffins.
Don’t show them off around your waist.

1+ cup turkey chili (possibly a little bit more than 1 cup. It was the last of the chili.)
1/6 Turkey quinoa meatloaf (1/2 of 3 mini loaves)
1 c steamed fresh green beans
90 cal Twix ice cream bar
